@nickkrillin More infinites came to be because modern horizons/designing for commander instead of 1v1 upended the use of mana as a balancing mechanism in Magic. Mana-gating and such is obsolete. So cards like Fleshraker+kozi command are free damage/mana/card engines
English

@ForceofPhil Yeah i definitely think rounds shouldn't be going so long extra, but my original post is that top got banned because of the time issue, not because of any infinites. The infinites came later.
English

@nickkrillin I recognize my lens is the minority: Idk why we collectively accept decks that can turn 1 kill consistently so players have 40+min to kill at a magic event they came to play magic at but refuse to change the infrastructure that allows rounds to go 30min over when we don’t have to
English

@ForceofPhil Like a slow player on, let's say, burn would finish much faster than a slow player on miracles
English

@nickkrillin When i say there would be more draws, I mean from the abolishing of 5 additional turns. I don't think there are any fewer rounds that go 30min over now than there were then. We all collectively just need to justify and reinforce a past decision without looking inward
English

@nickkrillin Yeah, there would be more draws, but that's okay because draws are part of the tournament structure. Burdening the schedule and, ultimately, ban decisions to uphold 5 additional turns is crazy. 5 extra turns are often pre-concession theater baiting. It's never made sense to me.
English

@nickkrillin These are always tricky convos bc I’m rarely perceived unbiased when top is the topic, but I’ve long advocated for abolishing 5 additional turns. When time is up it’s a draw. Inexperienced players remain, tournament structure has never evolved, and rounds still go wayyy over time
English

@ForceofPhil Phil we both know top got banned bc of people seeing miracles as the most played deck and deciding to try it at major events and sucking at it. My buddy was a legends miracles player and made most others look like idiots

Re-quoting this without any context of the context
Phil Nguyen@mtgbanding
quoting this without any context

@Eureka22422_MTG Brainsurge is soft-banned, BUT I think it’s stronger to play entreats 5-9 instead in those spots anyway
English

@ForceofPhil If you played 9 it wouldn’t be such a miracle when you always find them. Also, much more consistent with brainstorm and brain surge. I think worth exploring.
English

@BcdLegacy @Eureka22422_MTG Agreed! Abolish 5 additional turns, too!
English

@Eureka22422_MTG Competitive Magic would be better off if IDs gave 0 points in all formats. Win or get nothing. I’ll die on this hill.

New proposal:
We should be more like cEDH in our 60 card formats.
Instead of tie breakers, all X-2s should argue for Top 8 in a live debate.
Locked Top 8 acts as a panel and votes.
Bonus points for:
- Citing matchup data, vibes, and “I would’ve won if my opponent didn’t topdeck.”
- Visuals such as pictures showing their hand that they had the win if they didn’t time out
- Data on how many bad matchups they beat
English

@ForceofPhil do you really put beanstalk in the same class of cards as one ring and tamiyo?
English

@ForceofPhil Trade for fon, consign to Memory, Veil, PE and Dress down deal ?
English

@IamActuallyLvL1 They’re banned. So of the cards mentioned, those are the only two WotC considers over the line
English

@ForceofPhil isnt the real answer that EI and DHA arent over the line
English

@Roaringliger1 @RealPokemoki MaRo did a recent podcast on blocks and said blocks were phased out bc every successive set in a block performed 20% worse. So set one of a block was best, second sold 80% of the first, etc. it’s never about making the game/experience better, it’s always about making more money
English

@RealPokemoki And thats valid.
Its why I genuinely miss blocks. Both from a lore aspect and mechanically.
Sets flowed together and felt like cohesive strategies.

The Yu-Gi-Ohification of standard
Saffron Olive@SaffronOlive
It almost seems like Wizards new design philosophy is for each set to have a Standard deck build around a theme from the set - Lessons from Avatar, Elementals from Lorwyn, Warp Blink from EOE, Prowess from Final Fantasy. Also the deck is always Izzet.
