The Canadian Foreign Policy Institute informs people about the country’s diplomatic, aid, intelligence and military policies abroad.

Iran’s nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security, and Canada has been consistently clear that Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. While U.S. military action taken last night was designed to alleviate that threat, the situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile. Stability in the region is a priority. Canada calls on parties to return immediately to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis. As G7 leaders agreed in Kananaskis, the resolution of the Iranian crisis should lead to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza.

With protests planned in multiple cities across country this weekend against Canadian support for Israel’s aggression, check out webinar tomorrow. I'll be speaking with @CraigMokhiber Iranian Canadian Congress president Mona Ghassemi, ICC member Nassim Noroozi & @dimitrilascaris

Carney must use G7 to halt Israeli aggression on Iran The Iranian Canadian Congress, Just Peace Advocates & Canadian Foreign Policy Institute are calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to use this week’s G7 summit to pressure Israel to stop its attacks on Iran. On Friday, Israel launched a series of strikes that have killed dozens of Iranian civilians and destroyed significant infrastructure in that country. “The Iranian Canadian Congress is calling on Mark Carney to use its position as host of the G7 to restrain Israel”, said Iranian Canadian Congress president Mona Ghassemi. “We are dismayed by Prime Minister Carney’s initial endorsement of Israeli violence in Iran.” “If the G7 countries don’t stop enabling Israel’s violation of international law this conflict is likely to escalate into a broader regional war and considering global geopolitical tensions it’s not inconceivable that this could spiral into a world war”, noted Canadian Foreign Policy Institute fellow Yves Engler. “As host of the G7 at this time Mark Carney has a unique opportunity to deter such a scenario.” “Israel is a nuclear armed state that isn’t a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. It has absolutely no standing to complain about an Iranian nuclear energy program”, added John Philpot of Just Peace Advocates.
