Sheffield Forgemasters has seen its recapitalisation plan increased from £900 million to £1.3 billion to increase capacity for defence manufacture. Under the Government’s announced increase in defence spend, the infrastructure at Sheffield Forgemasters has been challenged to meet additional demand for its unique output, with greater resilience, faster production, and reduced lead times. One of our Directors has visited year-three pupils at Hillsborough Primary school to talk about why steel was prevalent in Sheffield, how it is made and how steelmaking has shaped the city, as part of a geography project. The visit was made as part of Sheffield Forgemasters’ approach to Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects, which sees regular engagement with children and school-leavers to illustrate the highly skilled careers that STEM learning can offer. Operations Director, Ryan Edmonds, said: “Visiting the children at Hillsborough Primary School was a real treat for me, and the interest shown by the pupils in the city’s steel history and its future is really encouraging."

Last weekend, on International Women’s Day, we reflected on the legacy of Sheffield’s Women of Steel. During both World Wars, thousands of women stepped into demanding engineering and steelmaking roles to keep vital production running while many men served on the front line. Their resilience, skill and determination played a critical role in Britain’s war effort. As we celebrate our 250th anniversary, we’re proud to honour the strength and legacy of the Women of Steel who helped shape our history and those who continue to shape our future. #InternationalWomensDay #WomenOfSteel

Sheffield Forgemasters is celebrating its 250-year anniversary. The Ministry of Defence-owned business has traced its heritage back to 1776, the year of American independence, when George Naylor helped his cutlery manufacturing partnership to move into steelmaking through the construction of a crucible steel furnace in the city. There are large castings. Then there's the largest single casting ever poured. 600 tons of molten steel through multiple melts. 6 weeks to cool enough (from 1500°C to ~1000°C) to be removed from the sand mold, then cooled further, then 2 weeks in heat treat. Pre-machined weight: 370 tons Finished weight: 325 tons All done by Sheffield Forgemasters.

Sheffield Forgemasters has launched a large-scale hybrid 3D Printer and Milling Machine to radically improve castings manufacture. The new facility will manufacture patterns; the solid shapes which form the first critical stage of casting production. Patterns are used to make a sand and resin mould which liquid steel is poured into to create the casting. The CEAD Flexbot 3D printer is a large-scale system, housed in a 14m x 8m x 5m enclosure. Robotic arm technology combined with 3D printing and milling uses additive and subtractive technologies to create a wide range of complex patterns. The system also supports more sustainable manufacturing. Additive deposition reduces waste material compared to conventional subtractive-only workflows, and the ability to recycle polymer feedstocks further strengthens the environmental benefits. Steelwork assembly has started on our landmark New Machine Shop building which will become one of the world’s most advanced, large-scale, machining facilities. McLaughlin & Harvey (@Official_McLH) have kicked off the New Year at Sheffield Forgemasters by putting up the first steel frames for the new facility on Weedon Street, which will span 30,000 m2, with a height of 32 metres, and which will be clearly visible from the M1 motorway at #Meadowhall. The building’s steel framework is due for completion in June, with gantry cranes for the facility fitted by October and the roof and cladding to follow later in the year, in order to house 24 new machines including some of the world’s largest, most advanced, Vertical Turning Lathes.
