The rebound performance of flexible 3D printing resins keeps improving year after year. If you’ve worked with flexible 3D printing materials for a while, you’ll probably remember when “flexible” often meant soft but not necessarily functional. Limited rebound, lower durability, and performance that was sometimes not even good enough for prototypes. This is changing with the new Formlabs Flexible 80A Resin V2. Formlabs Director of Hardware, Ian Ferguson, for fun, wrote a custom app using Claude Code to generate parametric Hoberman spheres. He then printed this sphere in Nylon 12 powder on the Fuse X1. 3D printing and additive materials have come a long way. Most people think resin prints are weak and brittle so I had a crazy idea for impact testing some parts 🤓 The end caps of these tubes are printed using @formlabs Tough 1000 resin, a new material with amazingly durable properties 🔥 These tubes are around 1 meter long and weigh about 30 lbs. We set up a scissor lift with a quick release mechanism inspired by the @MythBusters guys and dropped it a bunch from various heights, up to a max of 10 meters onto concrete 😱 The result? The parts survived. I honestly was blown away 🤯 Additive has come a long way 💪

Flexible 3D printing resins are becoming stronger and more capable every year! This is Formlabs Flexible 80A Resin V2. A great example of how far flexible photopolymers have come. Unlike other strong flexible SLA resins, this material does not require a separate oven-based thermal post-cure to complete polymerization. A standard light-curing process combined with controlled heat in the Form Cure (2nd Generation) is sufficient to achieve the desired material properties, simplifying the workflow while still delivering excellent mechanical performance. For Grasshopper inspiration, check out 3DBeast. If you haven’t heard of them yet, I highly recommend their YouTube channel.

@ACMEngineer Good question. TLDR: We put it in water to eliminate surface tackiness. Oxygen reacting with the elastomeric parts during post-cure can inhibit the surface cure and make them tacky, whereas the water displaces the oxygen and ensures a full cure at the surface.

We printed this flexible football out of the all new Flexible 80A resin! This is how we did it - After printing on the Form 4L, we wash the build platform in IPA to remove any excess resin. We then remove the supports from the football and wash it again. After that we allow the football to dry completely overnight. We then submerge the football in water, and cure it using the the Form CureL for 5 minutes. For this print, we ended up flipping the ball halfway through to ensure an even cure. The ball was then cured again at 80C for 5 minutes, resulting in this final amazing ball. #3dprinting #football #formlabs

@WrenchFire You should wash your part in IPA to remove excess resin - then there is two-step curing process that ensures tack-free surfaces. Cure parts submerged in a water bath in a UV transparent container at room temperature. After drying, cure in air at elevated temperature.
