FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: May 5, 2026
Location: Washington Center and Lima Rd
Time: Approximately 5:30pm
Details/Summary:
This evening at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a serious multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of West Washington Center Road and Lima Road.
Officers arrived to find four vehicles involved in the collision, with two occupants trapped inside their vehicles. The Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) quickly began extrication efforts and successfully freed both individuals. Medics on scene treated a total of four patients; two were transported to local hospitals
with serious to life-threatening injuries.
Preliminary information indicates that an SUV traveling southbound on Lima Road experienced a medical emergency. The vehicle crossed the concrete median, continued southbound in the northbound lanes, and then left the roadway at a high rate of speed. The SUV became airborne and struck a car stopped at the red light at Washington Center Road, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving two additional vehicles. Two occupants were pinned inside their vehicles as a result of the impact.
Due to the severity of the injuries and the complexity of the crash scene, the FWPD Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) was activated and has assumed responsibility for the investigation. FWPD’s Air Support Unit (ASU) is assisting with aerial documentation of the scene.
As the investigation remains ongoing, West Washington Center Road is closed to all traffic at the intersection. The closure is expected to remain in place until approximately 9:30 p.m.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
