This is a great piece. Thank you @FraserNelson for this thoughtful and nuanced contribution. An iftar event open to all communities in the spirit of sharing has been weaponised as part of the ‘ongoing culture wars’ where Muslims are vilified if they engage publicly and vilified for not engaging enough. Minorities who have experienced marginalisation and persecution understand where such vilification leads and it is heartening to see solidarity across faiths as well as from people who appreciate the importance of defending pluralism regardless of background.

There was a time when Muslims lived in inner Birmingham and the wider area was seen as an out-of-reach white space. Slowly the community has moved into middle class areas of Solihull and Sutton Coldfield where the existing communities have responded in a mixed way.
