@Melaniegouby hi, just a counter-point, you do realise this was one of the longest running campaigns at UCL and activists faced repression of protest rights, surveillance and threats of disciplinary action over the 7 years? it's hardly a step-ahead...

hopefully this will be seen as a call to action to democratise all higher education institutions, into accessible, ethical educational places for all! direct action works!

Divesting after years of students’ campaign should NOT be perceived as the symbol of positive change from UCL management but the proof that the latter has tried, by all means, to rip us of our right to make higher education better, more accessible and for its students.

Although we are pleased UCL has finally divested, we are disappointed that today’s decision makes UCL one of the last UK universities to divest and after a history of intense clamp-down on student protest, threats of disciplinary action, policing and surveillance of activists

Democratising the institution would also enable students, academics and staff to decide how it's resources and research funding can be used to most effectively avoid environmental degradation.

@conservationucl As much as homes for bees is great, this is a prime example of greenwashing by huge corporations that are largely responsible for environmental destruction and thus the declining population of bees

We take our inspiration from the Quebec student movement which used a square of red felt as their symbol. The idea would be to create a sense of spectacle, and visually demonstrate the effects of climate change!
