@FoxMillDem

I wasted 19 years as a Hunter Mill/Fairfax Dem and 8 years on the 10th CDDC/DPVA Central. Don't let this happen to you.

@TalkNats @JeffPassan A cheap team can do well in the regular season. Moneyball doesn't require pedigree. But the playoffs, thats where big sticker players show their value. You can dumpster dive your way through the regular season for sure, but not through October

Money matters in winning World Series unless you go back to the 2015 KC Royals. But making the playoffs, it's more than money as @JeffPassan shows. And not every extension -or- free agent deal for 9-figures works as #Nats fans know with Stephen Strasburg at $35 million a year! Now with that said, not spending and lack of forward thinking is an issue with retaining your young talent on long-term deals. But just like Trea Turner in 2016 to CJ Abrams in 2022, you need a GM who sees the future and acts on it then -- because when you wait too long, the player has little incentive to extend.

Memorial Day is often used as a marker for what's real and what isn't in a baseball season. And something fascinating is happening this year: The best teams and worst teams in MLB ... are spending the exact same in aggregate. Here's the full story at ESPN: espn.com/mlb/story/_/id…

From my apartment in NW DC… Grocery store: 8-min walk Metro Station: 7-min walk Dry Cleaner: 4-min walk Coffee: 3-min walk Kalorama Park: 5-min walk Liquor Store: 3-min walk Restaurants: 3-7 min walk Target: 15-min walk It’s hardly an urbanist lie.

@realEstateTrent "Everything our family needs is just a short walk away." This is a stupid urbanist lie and we need to stop pretending it isn't.

@JeffPassan Wait Jeff I thought a high payroll guarantees success. This is what all the dopes have been saying about the dodgers for the last couple years when the lolMets are right there in front of their eyes. I’m confused.

@tomfgoodwin Is it a good thing to employ people into jobs that add value to your life but not theirs?

Every time I come to Europe I’m reminded how many public facing jobs have vanished - there are many unmanned gas stations in Sweden - self checkouts make up 90% of checkouts , often no other option - boarding planes with minimal staff - unmanned train stations I used to think the USA was horribly behind - car parks where someone’s at the barrier to help - my condo building employs 50 full time staff - self checkout is still rare and always merely an option But these days I find it reassuring to have humans. It’s nice to be greeted by a face not an iPad. It’s nice to know there’s help. It’s nice to see people employed. You can go through a lot of experiences in Europe and see very few people working but also those that are have had their value diminished. They merely tell people where to stand. They show customers how to use machines . They listen to flustered complaining customers all day rather than adding to their days

@Russ36687448 @DIAS Public universities in New England are relatively few. That goes from anywhere north of Virginia. Lots of private schools but the state schools are all relatively small in each state.

@DIAS Genuinely yes, New England has the best public and private k-12 education in America, as well as the best university systems. In the North East in general we value education, and investment in education far more than other regions, this also contributes to why we are so blue.

As a Londonder who moved to USA and lived in the Northeast and the west coast, I have noticed a HUGE intelligence gap between the 2 In New England / New York people are much more cultured, self aware and mindful of other people. In California many more self centered, conflict driven people who find it hard to step out of their own worldview. I wonder if university culture plays a part in this.

@AKDay89 Disagree, the US could attack since there are no munitions shortages and Iran's counterattack capabilities are not particularly strong.

I've generally been the "We're going to attack Iran" guy the past year, whenever people were debating the possibility. Now, a friend notes: Gabbard out, Trump not going to son's wedding, Trump canceling weekend golf trip suggests we're going to attack. This time I predict: no attack and no deal. Can't get a (comprehensive JCPOA-style deal) because of political constraints. Can't attack because of munitions constraints and Iran's intact retaliatory capabilities. Agree?

Trump has canceled his visit to Trump National Golf Club Bedminster and will instead spend the weekend at the White House, his updated schedule shows.

@rpondiscio Higher salaries out going to lure people in other fields but it will help keep teachers who otherwise would leave teaching for something else. It's a defensive measure.

@rented_mule1951 @atrupar China has a rapidly aging society that will struggle to remain where is for the next few decades. I saw the movie you were describing back in the 80s when Japan was going to rule the world.

Trump's commencement message to Coast Guard cadets: "Our country is hot. This is a great time. Our country is hot. I hate to say it, but I will -- the last administration, we were a dead country. Right now we're the hottest country anywhere in the world. We're respected all over the world. You saw that in Venezuela and right now in Iran. The only question is, do we go in and finish it up?"

@ChazNuttycombe That is not surprising as the Democrat party has gotten more radical and antisemitic every cycle. A plus for the democrats as NY is projected to lose 4 seats after the census.

I think I said in 2024 that Israel/Palestine has largely been, in DW-NOMINATE terms, a second-dimensional issues, meaning that there's been minor dissent in both parties against Israel. But this is going to become first-dimensional: it will be a strictly party line issue a couple cycles from now. 2026 is the turning point in Democrats being the pro-Palestine party and Republicans being the pro-Israel party in actual federal governance.
Adam Carlson@admcrlsn

Per NYT/Siena: Just 24% of Dems support providing additional economic & military support to Israel. 68% oppose it We don’t yet know how important this will be to 2028 primary voters relative to other issues But this kind of spread screams litmus test for presidential aspirants

@kevinamezaga It’s because a bridge over the Potomac has to navigate 3 jurisdictions, MD, VA and DC (it controls the river in the DMV. Good luck figuring out the budgeting and that doesn’t even account for the permitting and potential eminent domain that might be necessary.

I will never understand why VA and MD find it so difficult to build bridges over the Potomac and Rappahannock. IMO a severe limit to growth, and for VA a large part of why its eastern peninsulas are dying. No reason a 90 mile distance should take 2:30-3+ hours.

@kevinamezaga Maryland doesn't want to build so as tobpteserve agriculture land. Bridges aren't being built iver the Rappahannoxk because there's no population density on either Neck to justify it

@morganwick @NateSilver538 Not my intent, just that Disney does have a deaf ear when they move away from something. It's not a good thing, and 538 was a go-to site for many for a long time. They screwed over Bill Simmons and then Nate in similar fashion.

We had to check this becuz there seemed no way that Jorbit Vivas could be hitting .000 in RISP spots this season. Checked it twice -- it's real. We knew in RISP that Daylen Lile (other than in Cincy) was struggling, and same w/ Drew Millas. Why send down Brady House over Vivas?
