@FoxWhitfield Fabulous news that we have a bison herd here in Cumbria. Is the location under wrap? Can a local folklorist and nature lover visit? 😉😊

I am delighted to see the UK’s second free-roaming bison project underway 🦬 A huge team effort to get here—despite significant regulatory barriers. We need to make it simpler and more affordable to scale projects like this. Much more to do. Onwards. #Rewilding #NatureRecovery

World Rewilding Day – Join the Conversation! 🌍 This Friday 20th, we’re marking World Rewilding Day with a relaxed and inspiring get-together at Wildwood Kent. Join us for a short, engaging talk from Juliette, a member of our education team, who will be sharing her work on developing a rewilded garden right here at Wildwood. It’s a brilliant example of how small, thoughtful changes can create real impact for native wildlife. After the talk, we’ll open things up for coffee and conversation, exploring how you can bring rewilding into your own garden. 🕚 11am – Midday 📍 Meet in the café 🎟️ Park admission required

Big congratulations to Wild Justice for bringing & winning this case. Dartmoor should be bursting with life & large tracts of restored temperate rainforest. Instead- in large part due to over grazing- it is in many places desolate & with less ecological richness than many urban areas. This case also points to the ancient truth that the so-called ‘tragedy of the commons’ is in fact a tragedy of the *unmanaged* commons and that we need to reform & balance commoners rights with the rights of nature to exist and flourish.

Good news - High Court rules parts of Dartmoor have been mismanaged! Overgrazing has been damaging protected sites on Dartmoor. Read the Press Release about our latest legal challenge: wildjustice.org.uk/dartmoor/wild-…

The Government's scrapped the worst parts of the Fingleton Review. When the nature-loving majority is united, we can win. There’s still a fight ahead. I won't settle for beating single bad policies: We've got to bin the whole idea that protecting nature is even up for debate.

The original Tree Huggers were the women of the Garhwal Hills of India who threw their arms around trees to save them. Their actions were inspired by the events of 1730 when soldiers were ordered to fell trees to build a palace and Bishnoi women ran to trees to stop the felling.

Bank of England bank notes to carry British wildlife. How about a group of species that went extinct in Britain, but which are now back? Osprey, large blue butterfly, humpback whale, spoonbill, lady’s slipper orchid, and this pool frog, could be candidates. Optimistic, hopeful.

For decades Oxford has had an ever-worsening housing shortage, yet land within a 15 minute walk of the city centre is used for scruffy allotments. Our housing crisis is a choice.

The numbers of sheep in Britain’s denuded hills (currently thirty odd million) are finally coming down. And that’s a good thing for nature and for farmers in marginal landscapes (not only because sheep prices are consequently going up). Upland farmers, especially the younger ones, are diversifying into native cattle which, in contrast to sheep, catalyse real and dramatic nature recovery, and require significantly less management. Additionally, stewardship and restoration payments; natural capital markets such as flood protection, natural water storage, pollution mitigation and so on; and agro/nature tourism are all starting to offer meaningful additional revenue streams for farmers in landscapes which are otherwise tough places to farm. Diversification is the key. The real pro farmer position is to advocate for these things. Arguing for sheep and nothing but sheep across great swathes of our country does farmers in these places a terrible disservice. bbc.com/news/articles/…
