Very sad news with the passing of Wayne Smith....an absolute doyen of Australian sports journalism. A true wordsmith. My dealings with him were around swimming and he was as passionate as anyone. Overall, though, just a great bloke!

Wayne was a powerhouse in sports journalism. He went above and beyond as a mentor. I was so fortunate to work with him recently. He will be greatly missed.

The late great Wayne Smith was such a terrier that when Kepler Wessels sold his story to a rival paper about returning to SA, Smithy jumped in his car and knocked on Kepler’s door to scoop the scoop before it hit the presses. Here’s Kepler being grilled by our hard nosed scribe.
