Now bear with us on this one, Chris is having a bit of a nostalgic wallow today. Not about the two riders in the photo, but the yellow top Greg LeMond is wearing. His team-mate, the great Bernard Hinault is wearing standard La Vie Claire kit, but Greg has gone of a little extra flare with his hooded Assos top. Oh, come on! If you were into cycling in the 1980s you either had one or wanted one. Those Assos hoodies were the business. We’d not long come out of wool remember, where thickness and layers ruled in winter. These tops were thin but warm, made from a textile mix that kept its shape due to the magic of Lycra, and Assos was THE clothing brand. It was founded by a Swiss, Toni Maier, the man responsible for the Lycra revolution. During the mid-1970s, Maier was part of a team of scientists and technicians study aerodynamics in cycling. They tried lots of approaches and produced a couple of more aerodynamic bikes and some equipment, but that still left the rider as the biggest source of aerodynamic drag. Maier started dressing riders in different materials in a wind tunnel and discovered that Lycra not only caused less drag than anything else it was even more slippery than bare skin, thank goodness. He developed a one-piece shorts and jersey combination in Lycra, and the word ‘skinsuit’ entered cycling’s lexicon. Maier refined the design, started Assos and it took the cycling world by storm, building a reputation for good fit, quality materials and good looks. So good that cycling clothes inspired several high-profile fashion designers. The functional, sleek, and often bold aesthetic of cycling kits was seen in the designs of Sir Paul Smith, who turned a nifty pedal when he was a young racer with the Beeston Road Club in Nottingham, Marine Serre and Christopher Raeburn, to name but three. Sir Paul is still a committed cyclist, with a huge collection of cycling memorabilia, and for us he wrote the foreword for our book, Cycling Legends 03 Jacques Anquetil, the man behind the mask. Wel erg typisch dat de VVD, die in 2 verkiezingen 12 zetels heeft verloren (-35% kiezers) meent te bepalen welke coalitie er komt🤷‍♂️ Met dat hautaine gedram over per sé centrum-rechts kabinet zet VVD zichzelf buitenspel. Mijn D66 gaat daar nooit mee akkoord. VVD👉🏼oppositie
