LEGENDS OF POLK’S PAST: Freddie Word, G (Basketball)
A native of Fort Myers, Freddie Word spent just one season at Polk State College, but that season was a memorable one. After stops at Johnson University and Allen Community College, Word played at Polk State as a sophomore during the 2021-22 season. That season, Word was recognized as a first-team All-Central Conference performer and an All-FCSAA selection.
For the season, Word averaged a team-best 13.4 points per game while shooting an efficient 51% from the field. With a roster that included fellow All-Conference performers Keenon Cole and Tommie Lewis, Word dished out a team-best 3.9 assists per game and averaged 3.5 rebounds and 1.8 steals. That season, Polk State finished 19-10 and reached the FCSAA Tournament for the first time under Head Coach Brandon Giles.
Since leaving Polk State, the 6-foot-1 Word has played NCAA Division II programs Glenville State University and University of Charleston in West Virginia and the University of Texas Permian Basin. For Glenville State during the 2022-23 season, Word earned second-team All-Mountain East honors after putting up 15.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game. After just three games at Charleston, Word capped his career by averaging nearly 12 points, six rebounds and four assists for Texas Permian Basin as a senior during the 2024-25 season.
