UNPOPULAR OPINION: ALL ARE LOSING, NOT JUST THE SHOP OWNER 🚨 People see a looted shop and think only the Ethiopian, Somali or Pakistani owner loses. Let's do some maths. A single shop in Durban CBD according to property 24 can cost between R25,000 and R45,000+ per month in rent. Most carry stock worth R500,000 or more. They also pay municipal fees, rates, electricity, security, workers CCTV and suppliers. So when a shop closes, it's not just one businessman who suffers. The municipality loses revenue. Workers lose jobs. Taxi operators lose customers. People travelling from KwaMashu, Umlazi and surrounding areas lose access to affordable goods. Tourists see the chaos and avoid coming to Durban Property owners lose tenants. The entire local economy takes a hit. Looting is the only business model where people celebrate destroying the very businesses that make their communities affordable and convenient. By the time everyone realizes who lost, there are empty shops, fewer jobs and higher prices for everyone. 🤦🏾‍♂️ Sometimes the biggest victim isn't the shop owner... it's the city itself.
