Yes, this exactly. Plus, in a very real way the common good turn against individual liberty neglects the way in which individal liberty fosters the common good. Free minds and free markets are two of humanity's greatest engines for both moral progress and human prosperity. Free minds and free markets are far more effective than government minds and government control at fostering human flourishing. That doesn't mean there's no role for regulation -- legal limits are necessary -- but the question really is one of defaults, and the American experiment rightly creates a default presumption of liberty over authority.
