๐Ÿ”ฅ"If trade surpluses become evidence of unfair trade, the U.S. will be attempting something unprecedented: using tariffs to punish other countries simply for selling goods the rest of the world wants to buy. Thatโ€™s not trade enforcement. Thatโ€™s Washington trying to tariff the laws of economics."
Marc L. Busch@marclbusch

Nuno Limao, Rod Ludema and I argue in this @TheHillOpinion piece that Trump's "structural excess capacity" Section 301 investigation isn't about trade enforcement, but about trying to tariff the laws of economics. thehill.com/opinion/financโ€ฆ

Affordability is crushing American families. Itโ€™s not wagesโ€”itโ€™s rising costs: ๐Ÿ  Housing ๐Ÿฅ Healthcare ๐Ÿ‘ถ Childcare @MichaelRStrain of @AEI argues that too many policymakers are focused on the wrong solutions. Tariffs, subsidies, and slogans wonโ€™t fix it. We need policies that expand supply, lower barriers, and actually let people prosper. Do y miss the latest episode. ๐Ÿ”—๐Ÿ‘‡

I donโ€™t think the author of this WSJ letter realizes his argument shows the 106-year-old Jones Act has failed: protectionism hasnโ€™t strengthened U.S. shipbuilding, itโ€™s stunted it. wsj.com/opinion/nixingโ€ฆ

Joe Kent didnโ€™t resign over the Iran war. He resigned because an FBI investigation was already open. Says a lot about the Tucker interview โ€” cover story. The resignation letter was the alibi. He saw it coming. He moved first. Now any pushback looks like a witch hunt. He didnโ€™t protest the war. He ran from the investigation.

Today @realDonaldTrump waived the "Jones Actโ€ because the war increased the price of oil. The Jones Act raises all sorts of prices by giving U.S. shipping companies special treatment. But it shouldnโ€™t be waived for 60 days. Hereโ€™s why it should be killed for good.

Small business owners say "affordabilityโ€ is the nationโ€™s leading issue requiring more action by the @WhiteHouse and Congress. One small but important step for small biz and consumers would be the price relief that would result from a tariff exemption for tinplate steel. Read more here: sbecouncil.org/2026/03/03/affโ€ฆ

Lots of pro-Jones Act types are out insisting the waiver is unneeded because a) there is no JA vessel shortage and b) foreign shipping offers no cost advantage. If true, they should welcome the waiver. Will go unused and be egg on the faces of JA critics.

The Trump administrationโ€™s decision to waive the Jones Act for the transportation of fertilizer and certain energy products is an implicit admission that the law is a glaring failure, says Catoโ€™s @cpgrabow.

On March 18, President Trump announced a 60-day suspension of the Jones Act in order to streamline the shipping of oil and gas to the US. In AEIdeas, @AEI's Vincent H. Smith takes on the Jones Act, writing that a better approach would be for Congress to end the antiquated law altogether. Read more: aei.org/american-boondโ€ฆ

Waiving the Jones Act is a good step to reduce prices in the short termโ€ฆ. But if everyone acknowledges it lowers prices, Congress should permanently repeal it. Eliminating this non sensical protectionist policy would save Americans $769 million annually
Annmarie Hordern@annmarie

Trump temporarily waived the Jones Act. โ€œPresident Trumpโ€™s decision to issue a 60-day Jones Act waiver is just another step to mitigate the short-term disruptions to the oil market as the U.S. military continues meeting the objectives of Operation Epic Fury,โ€ Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.
