📢 Esta semana se presentó ante el Tribunal Provincial Popular de #Artemisa un recurso de habeas corpus a favor del activista y preso político Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara. El recurso solicita al tribunal revisar la legalidad de su detención, al considerar que la condena de 5 años de prisión que le fue impuesta ya habría sido cumplida, por dos razones: 1/ Luis Manuel estuvo en prisión provisional desde el 11 de julio de 2021, tiempo que debe contarse como parte del cumplimiento de la condena. 2/ La ley permite rebajas por buena conducta. En este caso, Luis Manuel habría cumplido 4 años y 7 meses de prisión, más 8 meses de rebaja, lo que superaría los 5 años de condena. The resignations of Tarek William Saab and Alfredo Ruiz open an opportunity to dismantle #Venezuela’s repressive institutions. The new Attorney General and Ombudsperson must be chosen through a fair, merit-based and transparent process and act independently to uphold due process and constitutional guarantees for all Venezuelans. We are concerned by recent reports of the illegal search, destruction, and seizure of the homes of Venezuelan opposition figures, including Leopoldo López, Magalli Meda, and Laura Acosta. Despite the passage of the Amnesty Law for Democratic Coexistence, authorities appear to continue using repressive tactics to intimidate pro-democratic actors. Politically motivated actions of this kind undermine due process and violate fundamental rights, including the protection of private property. These incidents must be investigated and those responsible held accountable.
Today we recognize the courage of Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Castillo Pérez, who used their art to push back against the Cuban government’s restrictions on artistic freedom and expression—and were unjustly imprisoned for it. We reiterate our call for the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining political prisoners in #Venezuela. While the regime claims that the newly passed amnesty law will absolve political prisoners, it will not dismantle the country’s deeply rooted system of repression. A genuine amnesty process demands clear criteria, independent public oversight, and full adherence to international human rights standards. It must also include the repeal of vague laws that have been used to criminalize peaceful dissent. Venezuela is rated as Not Free in Freedom in the World and Freedom on the Net. While we welcome Sunday’s release of 30 additional political prisoners in Venezuela, including Jesús Armas and Juan Pablo Guanipa, we condemn Guanipa’s swift re-capture and subsequent disappearance. Political prisoners should not be subjected to restrictive measures or conditional freedom. Releases must be complete and unconditional. Genuine national reconciliation remains impossible as long as political and civil rights continue to be suppressed under authoritarian control. #FreeThemAll
