British absentee landlords haven't gone away, you know. The Duke of Devonshire (aka Peregrine Andrew Morny Cavendish) is turning the clock back a couple of centuries by imposing a rent rise on farmers in Co Waterford. Well, he is down to his last £910m... thejournal.ie/duke-of-devons…

In 1965, only 14% of Switzerland was connected to sewage treatment plants. Dead fish. Algae mats. A typhoid outbreak that killed 3 people. So they made clean water the law in 1971. Today, 98% are connected. They swim in city-centre rivers. The UK's dirty rivers are a choice.

The Anglo-Saxon chronicler Bede gave us this simple explanation for the name of the festival. "Eostremonath has a name which is now called Paschal month, and which was once named after a goddess of theirs named Eostre, and in her honour feasts were held in that month. Now they name the Paschal season by her name, calling the joy of the new rite by the time-honoured name of the old rite." Nothing else is known about Eostre, Bede might have even made her up, although Jacob Grimm did speculate that the old German name Ostara was possibly her cognate. He was trying to work backwards from traditions he saw in his time and it was only a theory, but it would be logical to assume a connection with Eostre in the lands the Anglo-Saxons originated from. Eggs and bunnies are not connected in any way to Eostre, these traditions come about much later on and within a Christian context. Eggs were prohibited during Lent so people would have had a glut of them to use at Easter, and eggs laid on the Sunday were painted and blessed for the occasion. The Easter bunny was always a hare, not a rabbit, and hopped out of the mists of 17th century German Lutheran folklore. During the Medieval era it was also believed that hares could impregnate themselves, leading to an association with Mary. So here's a medieval Easter bunny, a 14th century carving of a hare at the Church of St Mary, at Elmley Castle in Worcestershire. via Hugh Williams #Eostre #Goddess #EarthWisdom #WheeloftheYear #Mythology #Magic #Folklore #FolkTradition #FolkloreSunday #Easter

Do you think this is madness? 🤯 The council cut back a giant Buddleia in the name of "tidiness" but left loads of plastic litter behind. A total waste of our taxpayers' money. How is this an improvement? 🗑️✂️ #CouncilFail #Waste #Litter

Every fruit stone or pip you're about to throw away is a potential plant. Water germination works without compost, without equipment, and — for most of these — without cost beyond a clean jar and patience. A note on stone fruits: cherry, plum, and peach stones need four to six weeks in the fridge wrapped in damp kitchen paper before they'll germinate. Without that cold period, they won't break dormancy. Everything else on this list can go straight into water. 🥑 Avocado — three cocktail sticks to suspend the stone, pointed end up, submerged 6 cm in a jar. Roots in two to three weeks, then pot into compost. A popular British windowsill project. 🍋 Lemon pip — rinse pips from any shop-bought lemon, place in a shallow dish, 4 cm of water. Germinates quickly; grow on as a fragrant indoor citrus. 🍒 Cherry stone — cold stratify for six weeks first, then suspend in a jar 7 cm deep. Grow on as a productive tree or ornamental. 🍎 Apple pip — shallow bowl, 4 cm of water. Germinates in a group; transplant the strongest seedling. 🌸 Pomegranate seed — extract from a fresh pomegranate, rinse, place in a jar 6 cm deep. Grown in a sheltered spot or conservatory, it will fruit in mild British gardens. 🌿 Fig seed — scrape seeds from a ripe fig into a shallow dish, 4 cm of water. Figs are increasingly successful in British gardens with a warm wall. 💜 Hardy passion flower (Passiflora caerulea) — fully hardy across most of the UK; germinate seeds in a rounded glass, 5 cm deep. A vigorous climber once established. 🍑 Plum stone — cold stratify first, then jar, 6 cm deep. Grows readily from stone and often vigorous. 🍑 Peach or nectarine stone — cold stratify, then 4 cm in a shallow dish. Surprisingly successful against a warm south-facing wall in the south of England. 🍇 Grape pip — shallow dish, 4 cm. Germinates in a group; transplant the most vigorous. Hardy varieties will fruit outdoors in sheltered gardens. 🌰 Hazel — cold stratify for eight weeks, then 4 cm in a shallow dish. A native British hedging plant that germinates reliably from fresh autumn nuts. When roots reach 3 to 4 cm, transplant into a peat-free compost and water well.

Meet Ruby, a 5-year-old Doberman that many of our regular supporters will recognise (see all posts below for Ruby's story) She came into our care as an unclaimed stray, having clearly been through a great deal. Ruby had a severe leg injury that sadly left amputation as the only option Ruby has since made a fantastic recovery & is adapting brilliantly to life as a three-legged girl. Despite everything she’s been through, she remains an absolute delight 🐶She is kind, gentle, wonderfully even-tempered & has so much love to give 🐶Ruby adores people & is happiest when she’s close to her humans, soaking up affection & attention 🐶Ruby’s resilience & positive spirit make her an easy girl to fall in love with ✅️🐶She gets on well with other dogs ❌️😺❌️ Ruby will need a cat-free home 🏡Experience with tripaw dogs would be helpful but it’s by no means essential 🏡She truly is a stunning dog, inside & out. Ruby is so deserving of a safe, loving home where she can finally be cherished 🏡If you think you can offer Ruby the right home, please complete the application form by following the link below👇 🔗 greenacresrescue.org.uk/find-a-pet/dog… 📝FYI: Applications are processed Monday to Thursday. Please be patient, our Rehoming Team will be in contact with you as soon as possible📝 🏡🏥All successful applications will be subject to home & vet checks🏥🏡 📍Our animals are based in #Pembrokeshire South West #Wales While we do rehome across the UK, please keep our location in mind because visits to the centre are essential. We may also prioritise homes that are closer to the rescue For full details on our adoption process please visit: 🔗 greenacresrescue.org.uk/adoption-proce… 🔁Can’t adopt right now? The best way to help an animal in need is to SHARE THEIR POST so it reaches their forever home🔁 Thank you for considering adoption & for helping us find a truly special home for Ruby 💚🙏💚 #teamgreenacres #rescue #k9hour #rehomehour #teamzay

The moment I’ve been waiting for… finally happened 🤍 I heard it on the walkie… “Doctor, come to the donkey sanctuary… Honey is in labour!” My heart stopped… and I ran. And then… the most beautiful miracle. Honey gave birth to a stunning baby girl… bright, shining eyes… so full of life… so perfect. We’ve named her Bee 🐝🤍 Mom and baby are both doing perfectly fine… safe, calm, and surrounded by love. Moments like this… after everything we see every day… remind me why we never give up. I’ll share more soon when she’s up, clean, and exploring her world… but for now, just pure happiness 🤍 💳 PayPal: paypal.me/TAWFUK ❤️ Construction GoFundMe: gofundme.com/f/tawf-sanctua… 🔗 Linktree: linktr.ee/tahiraanimalwe…

Yes, is capitalism. When I worked the bagel shop, we weren’t allowed to give unhoused people free food or coffee but threw away dozens of bagels at the end of each day. Spoiler alert: we fed everyone we could and took home bagels to hand out afterwards. Fuck ‘em.

An American showed what his local Krispy Kreme does with unsold donuts at night. Straight into the trash. After private equity took over, the price of a dozen climbed to $22. And instead of selling them cheaper… They’d rather WASTE the food than lower the profit margin.
