Well...as unreasonable as these demands may seem to the US...they are talking, which is bullish? If the US counters this and tries to find something in the middle, for example, "give up your nukes and we will let go of some sanctions," then maybe a deal is closer than people think but it will take some serious negotiating since both sides are so apart on every issue.

What Trump did by refusing to open the strait by force was to put the ball in the court of every other country. Joining the attack on Iran was something the rest of the world refused as it would put them directly on the side of aggressors. They would have had a tough time justifying this to their own constituencies who are not in favor of supporting US/Israeli interests. By dividing the issue, Trump has allowed the international community to treat this problem as a completely different issue and thus the pressure campaign in on Iran to open the strait if it wants to maintain legitimacy among the international community. The biggest pressure point is likely coming from China, who is significantly more exposed to oil that passes through the strait than anyone else. China is an ally of Iran but is also dependent on the other gulf nations for Oil and Natural gas. They also have sway over consumption of Chinese goods. While the strait opening overnight isnt likely as it’s one of the only pieces of leverage they have at the moment, it’s likely they will gradually over the next few weeks. Oil markets have recognized this and are currently repricing closure supply and demand risk.
