From the 24 teams at the 1994 World Cup, 9 are not in at 48-team 2026 edition. No finalists Italy. No semi-finalists Bulgaria. No knockout-stage Nigeria, Romania or Republic of Ireland. No Greece, Cameroon, Russia. International football constantly evolves: and that is healthy!

FIFA could just scrap the whole qualification process and the basis of sporting merit for its tournament. Maybe it could become a closed shop, exclusively for a select group of pre-determined teams in Europe based on reputation. Perhaps they could call it a European Super League.
