Do you like animals? Do you especially like their parts? Are your favorite parts of animals cuttlebone and nictating membranes? Then you will love my new paper, and the other fantastic essays, in this collection.

@dwaldenwrites The fundamental teleology present in the Aristotelian distinction between matter and form is dualistic in character.

@RLangford18 You and only you are supposed to applaud. You are supposed to do so until your arms go numb and your palms begin to bleed. Thank you for asking.

On my next paper, I’m going to cite a couple hundred p-hacked, unreplicable papers I haven’t read. The dozen coauthors I’ve never met and can’t vouch for can add some more. This the very nature of research.

universities below the top 20 are going to face a massive enrollment crisis. can’t lend $400k against a credential that no longer has a wage premium. math does not work. we're going to see more and more of these schools up for sale. how would you turn around your fav school?

@FreyChristopher Take a 9 pager, use courier font, and justify margins. Voila 10 pages. AI not needed.

lol. I just looked up an old attempt (over 20 years ago) to translate the Odyssey. I went with “the man of tortuous paths.” I will not defend this choice on either linguistic or poetic grounds. 😂

Knowledge of ancient Greek is necessary to have an informed opinion about translations. But it’s certainly not sufficient to have a judicious or insightful opinion. I’ve seen a lot of “experts” making wild claims and arguments here.

@dikaioslin Well, they did all dislike the kind of moral philosophy being done at Oxford and on fairly similar grounds. That part I think is plausible. There are clear parallels between all four women's work, even if there are also differences.

I forgot which but there was a book review that made a similar (good) point that the four of them were so far apart in their philosophical stances that there is no plausible way to argue that they were all rebelling against the same dominant philosophical view.
Phil Hoyeck@PAHoyeck

And apart from Anscombe, who was a Catholic and so might have gone in for some kind of different account, none of these four women are likely to have rejected that picture! On the contrary, both Foot and Midgley were highly scientifically-minded. 11/

I have long admired the philosophy department @UVA and am incredibly fortunate to be part of this community and teach their amazing students for the next two years.

I've finally finished up my last week of teaching at UTulsa and I'm thrilled to share that Chris and I are moving to Charlottesville in June where we will both be taking up positions @UVA. Some pics of my last few visits on grounds to celebrate--I can't wait to get back! 🧵(1/5)

Being late Gen X is perfect timing. Had a childhood without the internet, college without smartphones, grad school and early career without AI, and will get to live a reasonably long and fruitful life before the machines exterminate us all.

These are BA programs that nobody was doing anyways. This is basically a law making them update the website to get rid of the non existent majors they still have in the catalog because it's nobody's job to clean it. Ohio State is not getting rid of chemistry and physics
Christopher Frey@FreyChristopher

Ohio is eliminating ~90 degree programs. This includes 4 year degrees is physics (at 4 schools), math (at 3), chemistry (at 3), and at least 7 other stem degrees. (Plus a bunch of education degrees in stem fields)
