@BMcGrewvy I’m sorry I hurt your feelings. I didn’t mean to insult you or denigrate your writing. It was just a very bold claim, like if I were to say my writing proovesthat, unlike Plato, I know how to do philosophy correctly. If you’d like to send what you wrote, I’d be happy to read it.

It’s probably because I’ve spent hundreds of hours with McDowell in seminar and conversation (he was my dissertation’s 2nd reader), but I find his writing to be perfectly clear and his prose often delightful.

@jdoyleDoyle1 I’m exaggerating (humorously I hope). But it’s interesting that the things you point to apply to argumentation quite generally, regardless of the field in which it occurs.

@FreyChristopher I don’t think that’s fair about philosophy. Premises should be unreasonable-to-reject. Argument should ideally be valid; will settle for ‘disputes about validity raise deep & interesting questions’. Conclusion shouldn’t be trivial

The problem with peer review in psychology, sociology, etc. is that the standards are bunk. The problem with peer review in philosophy is that we have no idea what the standards even are. It’s vibes all the way down.

Tenure wasn’t ever meant to be the “height” of a career. It isn’t a final end at all. It’s a means, an external good, that is instrumentally valuable to the achievement of things that are actually good in themselves.

A tenured professorship was meant to be the height of a scholarly career — reserved for those who made lasting contributions to knowledge. Those who achieved it were supposed to be permanently revered for their intellectual legacy. Today it is a low-paying job constrained by grant pressure, administrative control, customer-service obligations, and narrowing intellectual freedom. Once you get there, no one really cares — you’re replaceable like any other employee. If the supposed pinnacle of the profession is just another managed position, that is precisely the evidence I’ve been presenting that the system is broken.

Promotional raises and occasional yearly raises are pretty small for TT faculty. What matters far more is outside offers. Another school wants you, they offer more money, your school matches if they want to keep you. Deserve 🤷♂️. Like elsewhere, it’s mostly just market forces.

Lol. If you aren't teaching (in Latin) the trivium, quadrivium, metaphysics, ethics, natural philosophy, law, medicine, or theology, then you are colonizing the university. 😂

To include, as part of a syllabus on the idea of liberal education, the thinkers who came up with the idea of the liberal arts and those who developed the idea leading to the creation of the university, could only be due to politics. 🤡😂

@HaikuFictionDJU I think it was originally requested by Dominican missionaries in Spain. But it was ultimately used wherever Dominicans went. I’m not an expert on the missionary patterns at the time so can’t give a more detailed answer
