the meaning of oppressor/oppressed terminology is like progressivism 101. it just describes someone's positionality within kyriarchal systems of race, gender, class, etc. if you understand the idea of white privilege you already understand 'white people are oppressors'.

@graymaybe_ I understand marxists have a different understanding than the traditional concepts of a singular human nature, that's not what I'm saying though.

@graymaybe_ Telling me to read more Marxist literature is pretty unserious. Marxists don't hold a traditional view of human nature, but they absolutely are not anti-humanists. When I say human nature I mean as opposed to the rejection of human nature, not the traditional single nature.

@CDIGODDESS Yeah sums up my opinions well. As one of the people who got a bit upset (not nearly as upset as some people JESUS) about the sign, originally at least. I need to be less reactive, twitter is often a place to snark and snap at people and that's probably not good for discourse.

@graymaybe_ @KusonekoVT @MinModulation Marxism is not an all encompassing metanarrative. There are numerous flaws with it. It's pinned up by false concepts like "human nature" "dialectical materialism" and "staged of economic development". I draw a lot from Marxism but it isn't perfect.

@naive_gayes @PottymouthPooka Maybe in common discourse but not in the scope of critical theory as a practice. Nothing makes headway alone. Intersectionality isn't the savior of all it's a small fraction of a puzzle we will never solve entirely. The world is too complicated.

@FreyK47 @PottymouthPooka That's a fair point, however I keep seeing the same conversational topics being brought up 10 years later in regards to intersectionality, it seems to me discussing theory has made little headway alone.

What is the revolutionary without marx, but simultaneously what is he without the machinist and the assembler and the engineer.

@croissanwiches @PottymouthPooka I get that, but you just aren't acknowledging the difference between the academic definition of oppressor and the general definition. Most TWOC are aware of this distinction and a lot of white trans women simply aren't.

@PottymouthPooka There's been a lot of talking past each other. The white trans women don't understand the jargon on the sign. The people mad at them aren't interested in explaining. Even when they did most of the prior won't listen or try to understand it. It's the nature of twitter discourse.

@d4n_hal3n @762x54RAWR I can't keep having this conversation with y'all. We are white. We exist in a white supremacist society. By existing as white people we are socialized into white society and engage in whiteness. This inherently makes us perpetuators of whiteness, even if we aren't "racist".

white trans people always have the opportunity to be oppressors and will be oppressors when pressed about race topics 90% of the time. i have opportunities that a black trans woman would not have. your relation to the queer community will never absolve you of your whiteness

@zestytweetz @burnthelilacs In general conversation yes, but in critical theory no. This is really the crux of the misunderstanding in this conversation.

@burnthelilacs I feel like "Privilege" implies a potentially passive relationship with a social hierarchy whereas "Oppressor" implies an active role in perpetrating oppression.
