Returning to the 🇮🇹 Italian labor market data, the number of permanent employees (commonly referred to as "good jobs," as opposed to the so called "bad jobs" or temporary positions) reached a new record in April, totaling 16.5 million workers. Of course, a greater use of flexible contracts is not inherently bad news. For example, it can help women achieve a better work life balance. However, over the past few years we have seen one record after another in stable employment, to the point that the share of temporary workers (not showns) has fallen back to roughly its 2008 level. On the one hand, this contradicts the widespread perception of a labor market that is permanently "precarious." On the other hand, it paints a picture that is more consistent with the evolution of GDP and output per worker, since permanent jobs are generally better paid per hour worked than temporary ones. Never tell Europeans that, besides having a productivity problem, they also have a problem with hours worked. Or that, given the choices they have made, they cannot really complain about earning less than Americans. Read the comments if you want to see why. For the record, given the many comments from 🇮🇹 Italians, Italy’s main issue is productivity rather than hours worked (net of possible mismearument issues) whereas Europe as a whole also has a significant gap in hours worked. Compared with an American, a German works about 30% fewer hours, which is an enormous difference. In practical terms, compared with an American, a German’s work schedule looks something like this: today I work, today I work, today I stay home. The entire year. Given these choices, how can people complain about earning less than in the United States?

I am fairly sure that Europeans, including the Swiss, do not fully realize how much less they work compared with Americans. For what it's worth, I have lost count of the number of public holidays that can be combined with vacation days to create entire weeks off over the past year, something I never experienced in the United States, where it is essentially impossible by design. Beyond that, in my experience, work organization, workplace culture, and animal spirits are often not comparable. Will we be able to change Europe?
