Netherlands: Dutch special forces, including the marines and the Special Interventions Service [DSI], twice prepared a covert operation in May targeting fugitive drug baron Jos “Bolle Jos” Leijdekkers off the coast of Sierra Leone. Detailed surveillance established that Leijdekkers, responsible for industrial-scale cocaine trafficking linked to at least 30 tons recently seized by Spanish authorities, often traveled by boat between Sierra Leone and Liberia. The plan involved acquiring a large, foreign-flagged private vessel to serve as an undercover operational platform in international waters, minimizing detection risk compared to using a Dutch naval asset. Special units conducted months of land and maritime training for the maritime interdiction. The operation was called off both times at the last minute due to external factors, after intelligence suggested Leijdekkers altered his travel or received a tip. Political hesitation, shifting Cabinet priorities, and local protection in Sierra Leone complicated attempts to apprehend him.

Belgium: Fugitive drug trafficker Jos Leijdekkers, known as Bolle Jos, was sentenced in a new trial to eight years in prison, an 80,000 euro fine, and a ten-year port ban for orchestrating the smuggling of 11.2 tons of cocaine from Sierra Leone to the Port of Antwerp in late 2023. The cocaine, hidden in a container of palm kernel meal and packed in 8,464 bricks, was discovered at quay 1742 in Beveren after a dispute between rival pick-up crews triggered intervention by maritime police and customs. Twenty accomplices received sentences ranging from 18 months to 10 years, along with fines and some receiving additional port bans. Two suspects were acquitted. Leijdekkers has multiple convictions in Belgium and the Netherlands and remains at large, reportedly living in Sierra Leone under presidential protection, with extradition efforts from the Netherlands still unsuccessful.

Türkiye: Wilhelmus Adrianus Leijdekkers, a leading figure in a Netherlands-based international drug cartel and subject of an Interpol Red Notice, was captured in Istanbul’s Pendik district following a joint operation by intelligence and narcotics police. Known as the brother of criminal organization leader Joseph Johannes Leijdekkers, he had been under surveillance for involvement in cocaine trafficking and laundering proceeds from drug sales. He had previously escaped custody after being released by a Turkish court in 2024, despite an ongoing request for extradition by Dutch authorities for both drug trafficking and money laundering offenses.
