I once went to a tech conference for the free tote bag. Halfway through the day, someone with a clipboard ran up to me and said, “Are you ready? You’re on in five.” I laughed. He didn’t. Apparently, there was another girl with my exact name on the speaker list. Instead of correcting him, I said, “Of course.” They clipped a mic to my shirt and pushed me onto a stage in front of at least 200 people. The screen behind me said: “The Future of AI in Emerging Markets.” I don’t work in tech. I don’t work in markets. I barely understand my WiFi. I walked up to the podium and said, “Good afternoon everyone. I think the future is less about technology… and more about people.” Immediate nodding. Encouraged, I started saying vague but confident things like: “Access is the new currency.” “Innovation must be localized.” “We have to ask who we’re building for.” Every time I paused, they clapped. Someone live-tweeted quotes from my speech. Afterwards, three founders asked for my LinkedIn. I made one that night. The real speaker never showed up. I sometimes wonder if she saw the hashtag.

I stepped into Lagos yesterday after 4 years and I passed the exact road I used to hawk snacks when I was 16 years old. Tears ran through my eyes😭 I wasn’t passing the road with bucket on my head this time shouting “buy sweet buns”….i was passing the road to the airport to take my first international trip✈️ God na me and you for life o😭🎉 You have changed my story and still making me a work in progress🙏
