🚨 India is preparing to end a decades-old monopoly on missile production—and it could fundamentally transform the country’s defence industrial base. 🇮🇳 For the first time, the Ministry of Defence is preparing an RFP that would allow major private defence companies to manufacture the DRDO-developed Astra Mk2 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile. The timing is significant. State-owned Bharat Dynamics Ltd. (BDL) has long been the backbone of India’s missile production. But with the Indian Air Force expanding its inventory, indigenous fighter production accelerating, and export opportunities emerging, public-sector capacity alone may not be enough to meet future demand. The Astra Mk2 represents a major leap in indigenous air combat capability. With an estimated 180–200 km range, speeds exceeding Mach 4.5, and a dual-pulse rocket motor that significantly expands its no-escape zone, it is designed to strengthen the IAF’s long-range air superiority and counter advanced regional threats. Its importance extends beyond a single platform. The missile is planned for integration with the Tejas Mk1A, Su-30MKI, MiG-29, and Rafale Marine, steadily reducing dependence on imported air-to-air missile inventories while strengthening India’s indigenous weapons ecosystem. The real story, however, is the manufacturing model. Opening strategic missile production to companies such as Tata, Mahindra, Bharat Forge, Adani Defence, and ICOMM—alongside BDL—would create a distributed industrial base capable of supporting higher production rates, future exports, and faster wartime replenishment. Reports also suggest that Pralay, India’s tactical ballistic missile, could become another major programme opened to private-sector manufacturing. This is about far more than one missile. It is about building a sovereign, scalable defence manufacturing ecosystem where public and private industry work together to strengthen India’s long-term strategic autonomy. Astra Mk2 may soon become more than India’s next-generation BVR missile—it could mark the beginning of India’s next defence manufacturing revolution. 🇮🇳🚀
