@jmcextman@YouTube John, here in the UK it St Edmunds Pippin is a good Russet apple but not a commercial apple, bruises. If the weather is hot goes over quickly. Generally for us is a September apple. Egremont Russet is later and commonly grown for eating and premium juice.
Apples identified and to be identified (and to eat!).
The one in my hand has me stumpted at the moment. Picking and ready now. Acid.
@AbundanceYork@Fruitscape
@AbundanceYork@RichardBrownHT@AndyL19 There is a wide breadth of colour in Flower of the Town, from pale yellow base with more red streaks. Some very heavily winged ribs. The deep red painting of FOTT in the Northern Pomona isn't one that I see.
Taste wise. Good taste on its day, can go flowery quickly.
And these must be Flower of the Town, surely nothing else this shape 🤔,think colour is explained by these being windfalls, also more aromatic than I remember? What do you think @RichardBrownHT?
@AndyL19
Been looking at these all weekend, my guess is Acklam Russet, but it’s one I don’t really know.
‘Flat-round, bluntly rectangular’-The Northern Pomona
This is russet from cordons @AndyL19, pick mid Oct, so these not ready yet. Gonna check fruitID.com@RichardBrownHT
@AbundanceYork@RichardBrownHT@AndyL19 Your angular apple is flower of the town. Shall photograph Acklam Russet on the allotment later. More blush in mine.
We are particularly interested on any woollies feeding on traditionally resistant rootstock (such as MM106 and MM111) but we are also keen to determine population diversity so if you have a 'nice' infectation in your apple tree get in touch with @NiahGodfrey
@AbundanceYork Mulch trees when good moisture in the ground and check for beneficial insects like Typhlodromus pyri, lacewings, earwigs, ladybirds and hoverflies
@AbundanceYork In this instance I do not think Rosey Apple Aphid is the issue. The top left apple puckered around calyx typical of raa, but some cultivars do that. Malformed lower right (Flower of the town?) Incomplete pollination. Hammered effect probably water deficiency,
@AbundanceYork@ProjectOrchard@ArbAssociation@TheStreetTree Certainly can make a syrup form birch - Betula pendula but found it weak by comparison. In Russia apparently they do birch syrup too but much sweeter. Different species and colder so more sugary sap as antifreeze. Not had access to Acer saccharum to test
To the farmers who are helping to feed the nation, we thank you and want to keep you safe. Remember to be aware of power lines above and below while you work.
@EggucationDebs Lol, watch out Debs, they will eat the trees just like the goats did. Need higher guards now to generate trunk. Dont want the sheep nibbling the leader / tops off the tree.

@RichardBrownHT Hi Richard, bird damage most likely. Early leaves r sugar rich acting like anti freeze. The blossom is frost sensitive.
Possibly blue tits that are damaging the leaves winkle picking insects out the bud. Wood Pigeons and sparrows cause most damage here.
