Acknowledging the narrow historical definition upfront and then quietly swapping it out for the broadest one possible is a way of appearing to engage with the criticism while actually avoiding it, brother Hijab. You accuse critics of lacking historical precision in their understanding of what the Salaf meant when they condemned Kalam, yet proceed to define Kalam so loosely that even Ibn Taymiyya, who dedicated much of his scholarly life to attacking the Kalam tradition at a foundational level, would himself count as a practitioner of Kalam. A definition that blurs categories to that extent doesn't do any meaningful analytical work. Nobody criticizing you for doing Kalam has in mind the sense of literally just "speaking words." The kind of Kalam critics have in mind is not that different from the "proto-Mu'tazilite amalgamation" you yourself described, and that description is not far removed from the core of your approach. It's an approach that treats certain speculative metaphysical categories as the necessary foundation for establishing that God exists at all, and committing to everything those categories imply about the nature of existence and what can be attributed to the Creator. This isn't condemned because of some vague anti-intellectual impulse on the part of your critics, it's condemned because committing to that framework carries consequences for how divine attributes are understood and how scripture ends up being read (as the theology the Mutakallimun have built upon that very framework plainly demonstrates). Imam Ahmad's "rational engagement" with the Jahmiyya is a genuinely poor example here, because what he did and what the Kalami methodology in question does are categorically different things. He exposed contradictions, pointed to clear texts, and showed the absurdity of their positions. He didn't grant them a philosophical framework and argue from within it using speculative metaphysical categories upon which he based his understanding of scripture. That distinction can't be erased by simply calling both approaches "Kalam." So the problem isn't with reason or rational engagement itself, it's with a methodology that makes any rationally grounded certainty in the existence of God dependent on these metaphysically dense arguments, and labels anyone who doesn't ground their belief in this kind of reasoning as a "muqallid". No serious critic is arguing that reason plays no role in responding to modern atheism. The actual objection is about which rational framework you are working within and what following it through honestly commits you to.
