It was also cold-war era nationalism that made America go to the moon back during the Apollo missions. Nationalism has always been a big driver for space exploration. This might be the first time it’s being done solely for exploration’s sake

one benefit of being a culturally-rw society is that people support all the space exploration endeavours a country undertakes bc they equate it with the country’s achievements. (e.g. India, China ) west is culturally left and hence it has some real skeptics of space exploration.
