The Irish Jewish community are proud to gather in #HerzogPark Dublin this evening to celebrate the second night of #Hanukah25 We stand in solidarity with our Australian Jewish family, #bondibeach we grieve for their dead and pray for their injured. We will not live in fear. We will keep shining the light. #HerzogPark will remain. We will not allow its name to be changed. We will not allow our history be erased.

Sending our love and comfort to the small Irish Jewish community and Jewish communities worldwide on this festival of #Hanukkah which begins at sundown this evening, and which points back to one of the darkest chapters in Jewish history. Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the 2nd Jewish Temple in Jerusalem after it was rebuilt following its destruction by Babylon, reminding us that the God of Israel does not abandon His people when they are in crisis. Despite the darkness of our times, Hannukah shows us that the light will always shine brighter and will eventually overcome the darkness 🙏🏻💙

RIP Pope Francis (1936 - 2025). Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, he was a man of many firsts. The first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, and the first non-European to sit on the throne of Saint Peter in over a millennium. Beginning his reign in 2013, he had a well-deserved reputation for humility, plain-speaking, and a deep concern for the poor. A self-styled shepherd rather than a prince, Francis made headlines for washing prisoners’ feet, taking on climate change, and confronting the rot within his own Church. His connection to Ireland were many. In August 2018, he touched down in Dublin for the World Meeting of Families, marking the first papal visit to Ireland since 1979. But the Ireland he encountered was not the one his predecessor saw. Decades of revelations including Magdalene Laundries, mother-and-baby homes, clerical abuse and more had left deep wounds. Francis did not shy away. He offered words of sorrow and shame. He met with survivors. His visit to Knock Shrine in Mayo echoed with the memory of a more devout Ireland. Pilgrims lined the streets. Back at the Vatican, he ditched the papal palace for a guesthouse and swapped the limo for a Ford Focus. A symbolic shift, but a real one. He cleaned house at the Vatican Bank, shutting down shady accounts and pulling the curtain back on decades of quiet scandal. He shifted the tone on social issues. No doctrine changed, but when he said “Who am I to judge?” about gay priests and same sex marriages, the throne of Peter had never been so close to the true spirit of the Carpenter. RIP.
