Upon entering her room, deputies were hit with an overwhelming stench. They found Stacy severely emaciated, weak, and living in a room filled with trash, human waste, and debris. ​ The investigation immediately shifted focus to her primary caregivers: her father, Terry Joe McLellan, and her stepmother, Vicki McLellan. ​ When questioned, the parents offered a defense that shocked the public. They claimed Stacy was "stubborn" and had refused to eat or bathe. They argued they were "overwhelmed" and had simply stopped trying to provide care, failing to call for professional medical help even as her health reached a critical state. ​ ​ Both Terry Joe and Vicki were arrested and charged with Aggravated Elder Abuse and Neglect, a Class B felony in Alabama. ​ They were released on $30,000 bonds pending trial.
