Coincidentally, 2-3 days ago, I remembered a presentation at APSS (when CD players were cool, for time ref.), testing if vestibular stim. in rodents increased sleep - no effect. It got me thinking about this interesting idea tested in the preprint. 👍

Gene therapy restores hearing (!!) This is the goal. Beautiful mechanistic therapies with effect sizes so big that they can be seen in the very first dozen patients dosed. Congrats to the one and only Steve Holtzman and the Decibel team for establishing this program, and to Regeneron for carrying it forward.

So obviously we’re not good at predicting what impacts research will have. I also don’t think it should be just about dollars and lives. Discovery feeds our curiosity as humans, inspires art & science, and reminds us why we explore in the first place. That wonder has value too.

Question about writing fellowship apps for postdoc awards: how do you feel about postdocs using “I will do …” rather than “We will…” language? (So generally first person v third). Seems like it would be good to emphasize the “I” since it’s an award for the individual?
