@willsolfiac I think the point is that even if there was even more opposition to immigration, more overt racism etc - there was also greater class consciousness, purely by virtue of Britain being an industrial society. I think that’s true.

Interesting example in this video of the transformation of Islam in Britain - Mothin Ali's mother didn't wear a niqab, but his wife does. Other than that, I thought it was hilarious that he seems to be claiming that back when the working class had more political power, they didn't see ethnic difference, only their shared 'chains of hardship and debt.' This has always been a left-wing fantasy with very little connection to reality. Working class British people have always strongly opposed mass immigration.

Clive Ponting’s ‘1940’ is an excellent book & worth reading. Even in liberal democratic Britain, people expressing support for Germany, or expressing ‘defeatism’, were interned. The same would happen again in any war on a similar scale. None of this should be unexpected.

Today in 1650, Kilkenny, the capital of Confederate Ireland, surrendered to Oliver Cromwell. It was a terminal blow. The Irish Catholic Confederacy, established in 1642 as an ally to Charles I, was finished. Charles himself had been executed on 30 January 1649, his head separated from his body at Whitehall. Cromwell landed in Ireland that August with a score to settle after the massacre of Protestant settlers had burned itself into the English psyche, and Cromwell was not a man to let a grudge go cold. In a January 1649 declaration, he addressed the Irish as "hypocrites" who had "unprovoked" launched the most "barbarous Massacre... that ever the Sun beheld." By the time he reached Kilkenny, towns like Fethard and Callan had already fallen. Cromwell first tried to take the city the cheap way. He bribed a Captain Tickell to open a gate from the inside, but the plot was foiled. The correspondence was intercepted, Tickell was hanged, and Cromwell was forced to look at the walls. Kilkenny was a formidable target, divided into three walled districts. High Town by the castle, Irish Town to the north, and St. John’s on the eastern bank of the River Nore. Each presented its own gates and its own tactical headaches. Cromwell’s primary advantage was the plague, which had reached Kilkenny before he did. A garrison of 1,200 had withered to fewer than 400 combat-effective men. Sir Walter Butler held the command, but he was alone. The Duke of Ormond and the Confederate Commissioners had already slipped away to Limerick, leaving Butler with a skeleton crew and no prospect of relief. Cromwell arrived on 22 March and offered terms. Butler refused. On 25 March, Cromwell mounted two demi-cannon and a culverin on St. Patrick’s Church. Bombardment lasted thirty hours but after 100 cannonballs, a breach opened near the castle. Cromwell’s troops attempted to storm it twice but were repelled. They flatly disobeyed a third order to attack; the casualties were high, and Butler’s palisades remained discouraging. The stalemate broke when a flanking force overcame the civilian militia at Dean’s Gate. Irish Town fell. With his perimeter collapsed, Butler finally accepted the inevitable. On 27 March, the garrison marched out with colours flying, carrying their arms and baggage. The citizens were guaranteed protection. Cromwell even complimented Butler on his defense, admitting that without the breakthrough at Irish Town, he might have bypassed the city entirely. Unlike the horrors of Drogheda and Wexford, no civilians were killed. The difference was the timing of the terms. Because Butler surrendered before the final breach was stormed, the rules of 17th-century siege warfare were honored. The birthplace of Confederate Ireland changed hands with its dignity intact, which was more than most places got.
