Pakistan failed as a mediator between Iran and the US because neither side truly trusted Islamabad.
• Iran saw Pakistan as too close to Washington and dependent on US pressure.
• Many in Washington viewed Pakistan’s anti-Israel positioning as a liability.
• Even US Senator Lindsey Graham called Pakistan’s role “problematic.”
• Qatar and Oman already had deeper credibility and long-standing backchannel networks with Tehran.
• Pakistan had influence, but not enough leverage to force concessions from either side.
In geopolitics, mediation only works when both sides believe the mediator is neutral, powerful, and capable of guaranteeing outcomes. Pakistan struggled on all three fronts.

“Pakistan's role as mediator is more than problematic.”
US Senator Lindsey Graham openly questioned Islamabad’s neutrality in the US-Iran talks, citing Pakistan’s long-standing hostility toward Israel and reports of close coordination with Tehran.
This is now becoming a major fault line inside Washington itself.
Trump wants a broader Abraham Accords framework, but Pakistan refuses normalization with Israel while simultaneously trying to act as mediator.
That contradiction is creating growing distrust among pro-Israel and hawkish circles in the US establishment.
