@artwithinpod The book has strong Reddit-brained writing, as do all his books. And I love Weir. I find it corny but not inherently positive or negative. So maybe it’s a lot of projection from book readers.

genuinely racking my brains trying to figure out what people are talking about as "reddit millennial jokes" in this movie. I've been sensitive to this kind of thing before (it feels very present in EEAAO) but didn't notice anything here!! it's a comedy!!
Jonathan@jonathanmb32

The protagonist of Project Hail Mary is a left-brained elder millennial teaching middle schoolers, him having a Reddit sense of humor is maybe the most realistic part of the movie.

@RhysSullivan Yeah it's wild and actually kind of deeply optimistic feeling that the current state of technology in terms of conversational AI is well beyond essentially any piece of sci-fi ever written, aside from androids that are essentially human.

Project Hail Mary is excellent and you should go see it It’s crazy how outdated the “ai” medical / systems computer is in it already and the book only came out in 2021

@GrantSlatton This is one of the best and worst things about them. They’re like the Arrival aliens. Nice when writing a prompt, you don’t need to care about ordering your thoughts.

trying to get gpt-5.4-xhigh to generate code comments that target a first-time reader who is reading the code from top to bottom and it just can't help itself from assuming knowledge of the entire file a priori makes me feel there is a good "theory of mind" benchmark to be made

i wonder if as agents become more and more common place we'll also see the rise of HATEOAS style link relations in APIs outside of MCP servers for natural discovery of data and actions

@GFunk911 Basically I need to pick a target number. If I want most of my AFK workflows to be successful, then I need to pick a number that is conservative.

Doing some experiments today with Opus 4.6's 1M context window. Trying to push coding sessions deep into what I would consider the 'dumb zone' of SOTA models: >100K tokens. The drop-off in quality is really noticeable. Dumber decisions, worse code, worse instruction-following. Don't treat 1M context window any differently. It's still 100K of smart, and 900K of dumb.

Do you feel like you consistently see significant degradation in the 100-200k range, and even the 100-150k range? I definitely see large degradation above 200K and I rarely stay there for long, but maybe I've just had blinders on because I didn't think I was seeing degradation much before 200K. Maybe I was just seeing what I wanted to see

Cleared the context and it quickly solved a problem it had been stuck on for an hour at 150K-200K tokens. Sometimes the LLM just needs to touch grass

Small Pi subagents update: new option to run subagents from a fork of your current place in the convo (not just a fresh blank context), so they can inherit the context you already built up. pi install npm:pi-subagents github.com/nicobailon/pi-…

@ChrisExpTheNews @onefiftyfivemm To be fair it’s unusual in the universe of the show as well. The PPD diagnostics department is highly unusual within the shows universe. House is highly unrealistic for so many other reasons as well. For example, didyouknowhughlaurieisactualltbri

@GFunk911 @simonw @ah20im Yes, for certain jobs they shine For handling long audio multimodally they're still unique Within the OpenAI ecosystem one can use Whisper but it isn't as good in all languages, misses context that needs intelligence, the end LLM gets bare text as well

@angel_kld @kmedved Different concept. Not splitting by pick range. Fractional like “I trade you a 50% chance at my 2027 1st round pick, decided by flipping a coin 3 days before the draft”
