VIDEO | Gurugram: On rising pollution, Global Health Alliance Chairman and UK NHS cardiologist Dr. Rajay Narain says, “It’s a major health crisis. Research over the last 5, 10, and 15 years has shown that pollution affects the respiratory system and lungs, but more importantly, in the last five years, we have learned that it can impact almost every part of the body, heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, eyes, and skin. This is particularly concerning in countries like India, which already face a high burden of non-communicable diseases. Most deaths in India are due to conditions like cancer, heart disease, kidney and brain disorders. Pollution adds to this burden, having a synergistic effect. For example, in the heart, it can lead to more blockages in the arteries by causing inflammation within them.” (Full video available on PTI Videos- ptivideos.com)

VIDEO | On the government’s claim that there is no direct link between higher AQI and lung diseases, Global Health Alliance Chairman and UK NHS cardiologist Dr Rajay Narain says, “That is not correct. We need to prioritise science over politics. As far as my understanding goes, the Government of India follows the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), which recommend PM2.5 levels of around 40. The World Health Organisation, however, says it should be between 5 and 15, depending on daily or annual exposure. Even by the government’s own standards, current pollution levels are at least 10, 15, or even 20 times higher. We need to follow science and research and do what the majority of the world is doing.” (Full video available on PTI Videos- ptivideos.com)
