Check this out! 👀 Gravity waves can be seen on this satellite loop moving through southeast Canada and the Northeast US, emanating from an MCS in the Midwest. Like a rock dropped into water, strong vertical motions within the storm complex generate ripples in the atmosphere.

You likely noticed the severe winds that continued even after storms passed this morning. Those were caused by a strong wake low. They form in response to high pressure caused by cool, sinking air in a thunderstorm. The difference in pressure generates the winds. #iawx
