Their arsenal needs to meet certain standard which means mostly buy American made weapons which is hugely profitable for your weapons companies. Not that average person gets rich from it but a small group does. It’s like a membership card and you need to spend % op your gdp which largely goes into the US. Ask yourself why was Russia not let into NATO late 90s? How could your politicians explain the huge military budget if Russia wasn’t an enemy but an ally?

Without nato there wouldn’t be a war in Oekraïne and America wouldn’t be selling so many weapons en have money and knowledge flee Europe to the US. Everytime a new country joins they have to upgrade their weapons to mostly US companie specs and the more tension there is with Russia. Europe could have had cheap gas and minerals but decided to follow the US to expand NATO and make America richer and Russia mad.
