That pumpkin bucket on your porch? Cute. That rainwater pooling in it? Not so much. Tip it, toss it, or store it dry to keep mosquitoes from moving in.

Dress smart to avoid bites. Wearing long sleeves and pants creates a barrier between you and mosquitoes. Light-colored clothing is especially effective since it makes you less attractive to them.

Wear repellent with proven ingredients. For reliable protection, use repellents registered with the EPA that contain DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535. These ingredients provide the strongest defense against bites.

Maintain swimming pools and spas. Even when not in use, neglected water can quickly become a mosquito habitat. Make sure your pools are properly treated, and empty or cover spas when idle.

Cover or store buckets and containers. Any open container can hold water after rain or sprinklers. Store them upside down or cover them tightly when not in use so mosquitoes cannot turn them into nurseries.
