Dr Tidianne Ouattara Gives Status Update on the African Outer Space Programme africanews.space/dr-tidianne-gi… This programme is the result of 10 years of hard work, as the President of the Space Council has shown. And it has received a major boost with the creation of GMES and Africa, the joint programme between Africa and the European Union. The GMES and Africa Programme is itself the result of a process that was initiated some twenty years ago by Africa and Europe in what was then the monitoring of meteorology and climatology. The two parties made wise choices that were important factors in its success, notably the decision to locate GMES-type programmes within the African Union, to involve the academic and private sectors to a much greater extent, and to have them managed by Africans with the support of a small European technical team. These choices, in particular the involvement of universities, training centres, and the private sector, and the ownership of all stakeholders, remain key success factors in a world where NewSpace is revolutionising access to space and mobile technologies are bringing products to almost everyone. The use of space is now supported at the highest political and decision-making levels on the continent.

In Luanda, Angola, GMES and Africa participate in the New Space Africa 2024 conference. The first day began with the opening ceremony, an official tour of the stands, and a special visit to the G&A programme booth. Similar to the GeoWeek in Cape Town at the end of 2023, this booth is an open success, answering a number of inquiries from attendees regarding the programme and its potential benefits. Almost all of the communication materials were distributed on Day 1, when fifty experts and officials came to visit them. Additionally, it served as the setting for an initial round of interviews with the Director of NARSS and the Secretary General of the OSS, who discussed the contributions GMES has made to their organisation and their future goals. Other VIPs will be interviewed during the NSAC 2024 week. By the end of 2025, the second phase of GMES in Africa will be complete. The various parties involved in the programme, the PMU and the consortia, are stepping up their communication on the results achieved.

Training info centre operators to disseminate info increases the user base of the ocean state information provided by @ug_gmes, as these centres are widely listened to in the communities. Institutionalizing this engagement is necessary for education and sensitization of fishers.

On 24 December 2023 #oil-spills were observed on The Red Sea, near Abu Rudies, Egypt covering an area nearly 3 Km2. The potential source of this is a plateform. This service is provided by #MarCNoWA project under the #GMESAfrica program.
