I’m inspired by Tony Elumelu’s commitment to entrepreneurship across Africa. When leaders invest in people, we all win. Let’s build bridges & opportunities so every community thrives & amplify efforts that create jobs, reduce poverty, & promote mutual respect across the continent
Tony O. Elumelu, CFR@TonyOElumelu

I met Janine Roberts in Cape Town, and her story perfectly captures the power of entrepreneurship. After going through the Tony Elumelu Foundation @TonyElumeluFDN ’s Entrepreneurship Programme @tefconnect in 2016, Janine built Ukama Contract Packing into a growing enterprise employing 30+ people.

Things we should be looking into for the continent. Where would the headquarters be for the African Reserve Bank? Which African country is more credible? This supports the AfCFTA's vision. #AfricanUnity

Let me be honest. Tribal loyalty has done more damage to Nigeria than colonialism ever did. Because colonialism left, but tribal stupidity stayed and raised children.

Some of my South African brothers and sisters have insulted me on this App when I explained the reality and the futility of deporting people and spending millions of dollars hoping that they will not come back. What you are seeing here is that some of these people would have been deported by the South African Immigration Service, and they come back through other means. I am not saying the South African government should not deport people. I am simply saying that the South African authorities and South African citizens must be aware that the millions they are going to spend deporting people, hoping that they do not come back, is money going down the drain. The minute people are deported and get back to wherever their village is, the next day they start planning to return. The real solution to this problem is to ensure that living conditions in Zimbabwe are improved by the Zimbabwean authorities, and that the South African government engages the Zimbabwean authorities seriously on these issues. The economic reality in Zimbabwe is such that about 95 percent of people who could be working are not in employment. Women come to South Africa to give birth because the biggest hospital in Zimbabwe has only one maternity theatre, and as a result 2,500 Zimbabwean women die giving birth every year. People come from Zimbabwe and are then abused by the capitalist system in South Africa because they are employed and paid below a living wage. This also undermines South Africans, because they cannot negotiate for better wages when employers know there is cheaper labour available to do the same work. This is not an issue that requires emotion. It requires logic. There needs to be a serious conversation. The two countries and their leaders must talk honestly about this problem. If South African authorities do not speak firmly to their counterparts in Zimbabwe, this situation will continue. The only real beneficiaries of mass deportations are the service providers who transport people being deported. They make money. The South African taxpayer loses money because someone is deported today and is back tomorrow, and the government cannot stop it. There are criminal syndicates operating on both sides of the border, some of which clearly involve political elites. These people are organised. You cannot tell me that no one in high places knows what is happening, or that some are not involved. That is the reality of the economic and political situation in Zimbabwe. People will always come. If I wanted South Africans to adore me unnecessarily, I would simply chant deport, deport, deport. But if I want South Africans to understand the nature of the problem so that it can actually be solved, I must speak honestly. Fix the root cause. Right now, you are dealing with peripheral issues. You are dealing with symptoms. Symptoms never solve a problem. Deportations address symptoms, not causes. Deal with the root cause. That is the only way out of this mess. Otherwise, I can guarantee you that today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, more people will come and many will not be caught. Those who are caught will see themselves as unlucky. The rest will get through. These are syndicates that operate on both sides of the border.

Members of the @SANDF_ZA intercepted and arrested 1,174 undocumented persons from Zimbabwe attempting to enter South Africa through illegal border crossings this week. “This marks the first time our members have had to manage such a massive influx during this period of the festive season.” @SANDF_ZA

@pmcafrica I don’t like this road. Every time I travel on it, my windscreen gets hit by stones from the huge trucks. This has happened twice, and last time it cracked my entire windscreen. Something needs to be done about road safety on the N3.
