That market has been sustained by Mexican drug cartels, Chinese organized crime networks, and transnational drug supply chains that profit from a protected illegal cannabis economy. These are not single-product organizations. They are diversified criminal enterprises. Drug profits, including illegal cannabis, generate fungible cash that fuels the rest of the machinery: firearms trafficking, money laundering, labor exploitation, and sex trafficking, including minors. When drug revenue is protected, the entire criminal ecosystem is protected with it. That is the part prohibitionists refuse to confront. The illegal cannabis market is untaxed, untested, unregulated, and fully accessible to minors. It does not check ID, test products, or track distribution. It answers to no regulator and no public authority. Cash moves without a paper trail. Yet this is the system cannabis prohibitionists defend in practice, even as they claim the moral high ground. If this were truly about protecting children, the position would be obvious. Legal cannabis does the opposite of what prohibition delivers. It sells safe, tested, regulated products. It requires government-issued ID and electronic age verification. It creates records, accountability, and enforceable standards. It puts cannabis under lock and key.
