Our intuition often misleads us into thinking that general obesity carries the same risk as central obesity. Our study shows that visceral, not subcutaneous, fat drives peripheral #neuropathy through diabetes, hypertension, inflammation, and vascular disease.

Choosing diabetes medications that promote weight loss may help reduce nerve damage, improve long-term outcomes for patients. Weight management is crucial in diabetes care.

Their study found that people with type 2 diabetes on medications that cause weight gain had worse nerve damage and a greater loss of corneal nerves over time compared to those on weight loss medications.

Obesity is a major risk factor for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in type 2 diabetes. This study investigated the effect of glucose lowering medication associated with weight change on DPN.
