George Washington and Jefferson National Forest

Our wildland firefighters will be conducting prescribed burns today to reduce potential wildfire fuels in Alleghany County, VA near Lake Moomaw. The burns at Coles Point (100-acres) and Morris Hill (511 Acres) may bring smoke to the Covington and other surrounding communities.

If conditions allow, Fire Managers plan to ignite a prescribed burn of 405 acres on the Seakford Fields and Moody tracts in Page County, VA this afternoon. Residents of Luray and Bentonville may see and smell smoke.

If conditions allow, fire managers will conduct ignitions on the Hidden Valley fields today on tracts B10, A6, A7, A5, and A2. Hidden Valley West Trail will be temporarily closed.

For the protection of resources and public health and safety, the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest is restricting campfires. Effective immediately, all campfire outside of developed recreation sites is prohibited. More info can be found here: fs.usda.gov/alerts/gwj/ale…

The West Side Shooting Range is temporarily closed to provide for public health and safety. Forest Service Road 151 is closed south of Stony Run. Use caution and obey all road signs for your safety. Motorists should be alert for firefighter vehicles and smoke.

Did you make sure your fire was dead out? With current dry conditions on the forest remember to follow these fire safety campfire tips. REMEMBER: If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.

The spookiest part of the season...full parking lots! Leaf peepers beware, peak leaf season means peak forest visitors. If you are heading out for a fall hike have a back-up plan, your favorite spot might be full.

Campers, be advised that the season at Trout Pond has ended, and the campground is now closed. The day-use area remains open, but there is no running water on-site, including bathrooms.

The Gauley Ridge prescribed burn in Rockingham County has been postponed. Firefighters will not begin blacklining the area due to weather conditions. Burning activities have been tentatively rescheduled to start tomorrow.

Are you planning a hike to Crabtree Falls? Be advised this site will be closed to the public on the morning of Wednesday, October 25th, for first responder training.
