The midfielder is already emerging as a strong candidate for a central midfield role in the squad as he was able to showcase his qualities. Today in training, he stood out as an effective link in the build-up play while also demonstrating his ability to make dangerous runs into the opposition penalty area. It was a clear statement that, even though the battle for a place in Atlético’s midfield is expected to be tougher than last season, Mendoza is already showing through training that he intends to earn a significant role. There are voices within the club who believe a loan spell might be the best way to aid the development of both Obed Vargas and Mendoza. However, Mendoza is convinced there is no better environment for his growth than working every day under Simeone. He has no intention of continuing his development away from Atlético.
