If they took Brown over Simmons in 2016, they would have gotten killed for it. Simmons was above and beyond the top prospect. No team, including the Celtics, would have done that. Yeah, they COULD'VE but they wouldnt. They had not shot at Tatum. Ainge has said as much since then. They played the Sixers into thinking they wanted Fultz, and the Sixers traded up to get their guy. If they gave any inclination that they would take Tatum, the Celtics would have stayed at 1 and just drafted him there.

Brown was never the pick over Simmons. Never. Anyone with that pick, including the Celtics, was taking Simmons. That’s like criticizing the Sixers for taking Iverson over Kobe in 96. If they showed any interest in Tatum, the Celtics wouldn’t have traded the pick, they would have stayed at 1 and taken him.but they wanted Fultz, who was another consensus #1, so the Celtics made it seem like they wanted Fultz so the Sixers would trade.
