Not to sound like an old-man, pro-Philly crank, but … On 6/23/71, the #Phillies’ Rick Wise hit 2 HRs, struck out 12, & threw a no-hitter vs the Reds. The Rose-Bench-Perez-George Foster Reds. It’s fair to say Shohei Ohtani had the best game ever. But if he did, it ain’t by a lot.

In all the coverage of Ohtani's great night, I have seen mentions of Babe Ruth (of course), Tony Cloninger, and Rick Wise, maybe Jim Tobin ... but not Guy Hecker, the pitcher who in 1886 led his league in batting average while winning 26 games (two years earlier, he had won 52).

12 years ago tonight I was pacing and sweating to game 3 of the 2013 ALCS. Game 2 had the fireworks, but game 3 was a nail biter. Lackey was a beast, Nap's bat came up big, and Tazawa & Koji crushed the Tigers' hopes by striking out Miggy & Fielder with the tying run on 3rd.
