Very excited our recent work with Daniel Fisher and @BhayaDevaki on long-term coevolution of natural cyanobacteria is up on bioRxiv. Instead of diverging into specialist strains, we find different species slowly merge on timescales of 100k years. (1/n) doi.org/10.1101/2023.0…

New preprint to close out the year! Led by Alana Papula and together with Daniel Fisher, we used single-cell genomes to infer the evolution of Prochlorococcus—one of the most abundant and genetically diverse bacteria on Earth. Check it out here: doi.org/10.64898/2025.…

We have a funding for postdoctoral fellowship that needs to be filled ASAP. We are exploring new directions (1) at the interface of non-equilibrium computations and physical learning and (2) in building ecologically motivated AI models for microbiomes. Please spread the word!

Very excited to share final version of our paper! What forces shape evolution of cross-feeding among planktonic ocean microbes, and how does it in turn drive self-organization of biogeochemical cycles? These are the questions we explore here: science.org/doi/full/10.11…

After a long and winding odyssey, excited to finally drop anchor in open-access waters. This preprint shows how neutral allele frequency time series can illuminate disease transmission rates between communities— key for epidemic fore- & backcasting. medrxiv.org/content/10.110… 🧵

relative to selection with standard population genetics theory is not clear. Presumably spatial structure within the population plays an important role in determining the effective selection and recombination rates, but precisely how this happens is still a mystery. (n/n)

Selective sweeps with high rates of recombination could explain how long segments that are transferred initially could be broken up into the blocks we observe fast enough so that mutations could not have accumulated. But how to reconcile the high recombination rates (17/n)
