I’ve been seeing a lot of COVID+ patients admitted with DKA this week. My gut tells me it’s coincidental since Omicron is so contagious & there are way more incidental positives. But part of me wonders if there’s any correlation between Omicron and DKA? …anyone have thoughts?

@almoskow @BIDMCPharmRes @BIDMC_IM 2/2-Maybe related to pt comorbidities-perhaps we see it earlier/mainly in pts w/DM,CKD,elderly 2/2 they aren’t able to compensate as well for lower aldost. levels (whereas most ppl can maintain K via aldost-independent mechanisms for longer periods of time, ie onset may be later

@almoskow @BIDMCPharmRes @BIDMC_IM 1/2 Good question! -Lots of variable data, but seems that altho there's a dose dependent effect with aldosterone inhibition, it can still occur at any dose/duration (I’ve seen reports w/ IV infusions and SQ ppx heparin doses) - Onset can occur as soon as 1–3 days after heparin
