Well, here we go! It has been an honour and a pleasure to have been your MP over the last four and a half years. Barrow & Furness is an amazing place, full of amazing people, and of course I’d love another chance to do this job and keep serving them. But before we get into the election proper, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the opportunity you’ve given me these last few years to fight for you. I know I won’t have always got it right, but I’ve loved trying. We’ve achieved a lot - over £370million in Town Deals, Levelling Up Funds, through the Team Barrow work I’ve led on that will transform Furness, and decades of work secured in the shipyard. And nearly 29,000 pieces of casework completed. I’d love the chance to keep fighting for you and to see that investment delivered. No doubt you’ll be sick of me talking about that by the end of this campaign, so for now I’ll just say - thank you. S.

@simonfell You might get another. Though your constituents are decent people and were always going to ditch vile, incompetent self serving Tories. Especially after you shamed yourself by voting to starve vulnerable British children. Good riddance!

@Telegraph Brilliant. Just what’s needed to highlight the catastrophe that is the Conservatives. Bring out the old baffled Morlock Johnson. He should be front and centre it’s largely his fault they are to be decimated. Good riddance Tory Scum!

You can’t afford the risk of Labour. Keir Starmer wants power so he can raise tax on your home, your pension, your job and your car. Voting for anyone but the Conservatives is a vote for those higher taxes.

Huge thanks to @CandoFM for hosting a debate last week with all the candidates standing to be Barrow & Furness’ next MP. This is an amazing place to call home, and over the last 4 1/2 years I’ve supported thousands of constituents, secured over £370million of investment into the area, and fought for Furness to be supported. Together we’ve made the first steps to really changing this fantastic place. There’s a university campus being built, £220million for Team Barrow, hundreds of homes unlocked, a high street on the verge of being turned around, the shipyard secured, community groups backed, new nuclear on the horizon, renewable energy projects kicking off, and cultural institutions saved. But there’s so much more to do, and I don’t want the progress we’ve made to be put at risk. So I’m asking you to lend me your vote on 4 July. Politicians are elected to get a job done. To serve the community that they live in, and to fight for it, rather than each other. Over the last few years, I’ve done just that. And I’m glad to have gained support from across the political spectrum along the way - from former Labour, Brexit Party and Lib Dem members. We’ve made huge progress together, but there’s lots more to do. So I’m hoping that you’ll lend me your vote on 4 July so we can keep up the progress we’ve made locally and not put it at risk. We've come through tough times. And now there is a choice to be made. You can choose Angela Rayner and Keir Starmer and get higher taxes, higher bills and have your pension raided. Or you can stick with us and the plan that is working. We will cut your taxes. We will protect your pension. And we will defend this nation. For a more secure future, vote Conservative.

Angela Rayner has already pulled Starmer’s strings to get him to let Diane Abbott stand and to surrender to the demands of trade unions. What will she make him do next?

It’s a gloriously sunny day and polls will remain open until 10pm. No matter who you vote for, please do take the time to vote. In Barrow & Furness we have Ulverston Town Council and Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner elections. I was very glad to vote for Mike Johnson. He’s been a fantastic Deputy PFCC, focussing on rural crime, speeding and anti-social behaviour, and he’ll be a very good successor to Peter McCall. Don’t forget your ID when you vote! 🗳️

Friday was an amazing day. As part of #ParliamentWeek, I joined four local schools to explore democracy with them. They each took a different approach, and it was fascinating to talk to them, to share my experiences, and to explain how parliament works, and why it matters. Sacred Heart Primary held an absolutely incredible mock-Parliament, with a debate on whether their school should be knocked down and rebuilt, or if the existing building should be fixed up. Front and backbenchers made impassioned speeches, while Hansard writers took notes, before the clerks tallied the votes and the Speaker (me!) announced the result. At @DowdalesSchool I joined the Citizenship class and did a Q&A on everything from how political parties work, and how to become a politician, to scrutinising the fine detail of legislation, and passing laws of your own. Every single student asked a question and the quality was phenomenal. Mr Cull, the Head of @Ormsgill_School, explained to me that the school has just elected it own Parliament, and so the MPs each asked me a brilliant question, and off the back of one of them we made plans to run a campaign to improve the playground in Barrow Park. Finally, in @FurnessAcademy, the whole sports hall had been turned into a series of debating chambers. I shared a bit about what sitting in the chamber of the House of Commons was like and then acted as the Speaker, calling votes on questions as diverse as whether people should have to pay for sport on TV (no), and whether teachers should be replaced by AI (the noes had it again!). Thank you so much to all the teachers, students and staff who supported these activities this year. I was amazed by their diversity and quality. And this just scratches the surface of what happened in Furness this year, with dozens of schools and youth groups taking part. Thank you. 🗳️ #UKPW @YourUKParl

It was a pleasure this afternoon to speak up alongside my excellent friend and colleague Holly Mumby-Croft in support of British Steel. Sovereign capability for manufacturing steel is crucially important for the country as we lean in to project after project which will require new steel over the next few decades. Whether for our submarine programme, with new nuclear, for the production of wind turbines, or for much of our new infrastructure, steel is essential. My question to the Minister today - is Government doing enough to send signals to British Steel of the pipeline of work ahead?

Delighted to see the PM commit to upgrading the Energy Coast line, stretching from Carlisle, Workington and Barrow in his speech this afternoon. This crucially important line links Moorside, which would generate up to 7% of the UK’s electricity, to Barrow, home of the UK’s submarine enterprise, charged with delivering the remaining 2 Astute class boats, 4 Dreadnought, and the new SSN-AUKUS class, alongside our partners in 🇦🇺 and 🇺🇸. Upgrading this line will allow over 172million tonnes of freight to be taken off our roads, and will support our national security, energy security, and our international partners too. Providing this capacity will support job creation across the coast, taking pressure off our local roads, boosting tourism and unlocking new homes in South Cumbria. This work is critically important and I’m very grateful to the PM and his team for their focus on Furness and South Cumbria.

1/ I’m cancelling the rest of HS2. In its place we’ll reinvest every penny in hundreds of new transport projects in the North, Midlands, and across the country. That's a £36 billion investment. Every region bar London gets the same or more than under HS2, with quicker results🧵

Let’s put an end to the unfair Garden waste collection tax in Barrow! Do you agree with me that it’s unfair for Barrow residents to pay for their waste collection, when South Lakeland, and Eden residents don’t? Send a message to the council here: simonfell.org/garden-waste-c…
