I’ve spent the past year on a search. How do we push back against the forces that feel like they are crushing us right now? How do we resist the dehumanization of our politics, our technology? The answers came from people who pushed back before us: the dissidents...🧵

The festooning of Donald Trump’s name and likeness across Washington, D.C., is consistent with authoritarian tendencies, @galbeckerman argues: These are leaders who “like to have their face in your face.” Read more, and view a collection of images taken across the nation’s capital: theatln.tc/brEwDYY9 📸: Carolyn Van Houten

Ibram X. Kendi’s new book, "Chain of Ideas," describes the "Great Replacement" theory as the product of a conspiracy—but he fails to explain why it appeals to people in the first place, @GalBeckerman argues: theatlantic.com/books/2026/05/…

Extremely grateful for this deeply engaged review of How to Be a Dissident in the @LAReviewofBooks, which correctly diagnoses my state of mind: "He does not flinch from his own dilemmas...This is writing that trusts the reader to be in the same difficulty. It earns that trust."

I wrote about Ibram X. Kendi's new book, which takes on the admirable task of cataloging the spread of the dangerous Great Replacement Theory, but ignores the actual reasons why its proven so appealing. theatlantic.com/books/2026/05/…

When you understand that “doing nothing” is its own choice, it forces a different kind of honesty. It makes you ask what you can influence right now, what small move you can make today that shifts the trajectory even a little. Tune in with @galbeckerman buff.ly/RriJPIB

หนังสือเล่มใหม่พึ่งออก How to Be a Dissident ของ Gal Beckerman นักเขียน The Atlantic เขียนถึงผมด้วย เล่มนี้เหมือนขยายจาก On Tyranny ของ Tim Snyder ซึ่งโฟกัสยุโรปตะวันออกเป็นหลัก หากเล่มนี้ครอบคลุมไปถึงอดีตกาล ตั้งแต่นักคิดอย่าง Spinoza, Hannah Arendt มาจนถึงนักเคลื่อนไหวสมัยใหม่
Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal@NetiwitC

Delighted to find @galbeckerman ’s How to Be a Dissident this week and surprised to see my activism and conscientious objection case mentioned in it. A rich and timely book, moving from Spinoza, Gramsci, and Hannah Arendt to present-day struggles. Highly recommended.
