What's your favorite non #dnd or #pathfinder game my #ttrpgcommunity friends?
I like DCC, especially it's startup rules. Crazy right😁

@TimothyGroves2 @Maximumatheist In my sect, it's The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.
But I will abide these particular heretics.

So, I saw a post elsewhere about Paladins (and anti-paladins) in D&D and it brought me back to this question: What role does the paladin fill in a thematic sense that a cleric doesn't? Sure, they're the "holy warriors," but to me that's rather shallow.
Paladins have a close relationship with a god. They spread their faith. They adhere to a code of conduct. They have magical abilities. They can fight. They are called upon in times of need. Gods use them to promote their agendas. They are leaders and spiritual advisors to their community.
All of that applies to the Cleric. What role in a story does a Paladin fill that a Cleric doesn't? What role does a Cleric fill that a Paladin can't?
I've seen some say that paladins are chosen by a god, but then again, so are clerics. There's lots of people who worship, but only the very special few get those sweet spell casting abilities. They, too, are chosen, singled out as special.
Mechanically, Paladins fill a niche between Fighter and Cleric, and that's fine, but when you look beyond mechanics I'm having a hard time coming up with a meaningful difference between the two.
We just traditionally give one a sword and the other a mace, and one spends more time chopping and the other spends more time zapping. Maybe I'm deconstructing things a bit too far, I dunno.
I'm looking for a few non-mechanical aspects that I can look at and say, "THAT definitely makes someone a paladin instead of a cleric."
Maybe @Nymdok / @DaDrunkDragon / @WeeWheaton / @KnightsLastCall have some insight. It's something that's bugged me since 2nd Edition.

@Nodge_Noddlers @StephenKing I imagine the sledgehammer decision was an easy one, for film-making convenience: it accomplished the same end as the axe, without every shot thereafter complicated by the need to fake a missing foot.
English

@StephenKing Anything new in the works Mr King?
The first ever proper book I read all the way through was Misery, been a fan ever since.
I do remember watching the film after the book and was like "they changed the gruesome bit about the feet".
Why did they change it to a sledgehammer ?

Dungeon Fantasy RPG may be the game that out-dungeons and out-dragons the rest, but it (or any fantasy RPG) can always use more artifacts. Artifacts of Legend, even.
